Computer Associates' product Knowledge Based Manufacturing, (CA/KBM) was written to allow traceability through the Lot Control function. Lot Control offers one level of inventory management. In CA/KBM once a Lot Number is assigned to a batch of material, you can maintain its history throughout the entire manufacturing process.

The Lot Control function was designed to offer visibility and traceability to batch material. Batch meaning a standard run or lot size, which is determined by container size, convention, line rates, and/or standard run length. But what about the individual part, item, or component number? How do you trace this information? How do you know where a part has been? Where a component is going?
